Welcome to Tunkhannock Township Volunteer Fire Company!

 

The Tunkhannock Township Volunteer Fire Company was established in 1953 by the citizens of Long Pond, PA. The first company fire trucks were housed by the residents in their private garages. As the need for a fire house grew, the fire company started construction in 1957 of a 2 bay fire station located on Township property adjacent to the 1 room school house. Most of the construction materials to build the fire station were donated by local contractors and businessmen. The labor to build the fire station was ALL Volunteer. In 1958 the Fire Company became an official chartered organization. The Fire Station construction was completed in 1962 with the pouring of the concrete floor. A 1962 quarter is inset in the floor of the 1st bay.
In 1999 the fire company realized it had grown out of the current fire station and there was no room to add an addition on so a building committee was formed and the eventual construction of a new state of the art station took construction in 2001 and finished in November of 2002 with a dedication ceremony.   The new station has 7 apparatus bays, an engineering room, a cascade room, a decon room, a meeting room, a business office, a radio room, a full commercial kitchen etc. The 5 acre land parcel was leased for $1.00/year for 30 years and eventually it was donated to the Fire Company by the owner The Bethlehem Water Authority. The cost to build was $980,000.00. 
The Fire Company covers a 26 square mile area of mostly residential development communities, some commercial areas including Pocono International Raceway a 2.5 mile NASCAR racetrack. A large portion of the township is protected and preserved from development, this area is prone to wild land fires.  Interstate Routes 80 and 380 run through the Township and are covered for emergency responses. Currently the Fire Company responds to 245 emergency responses each year and the number continues to rise.  
The department meets every Tuesday evening @ 7:00pm.  Please come out and meet us and see our equipment and facility.
